About this Tour

If you only have time for one tour, then this one has it all.

In Silves, the former Moorish capital, you can visit the oldest part of the city where the largest castle in the Algarve and the oldest Cathedral are located. Climb the Serra de Monchique to Fóia, visiting the highest point of the Algarve, with time for spectacular photos.

On your way down, we will make a stop for lunch (not included). In the afternoon we will visit Lagos, where sightseeing includes the former slave market dating back to the 15th century, the golden church of Santo António, the fortress and the old town.

The tour continues to Cape St. Vicente, the most south-western point of Europe, once known as “the End of the World”. Landmarks include the great lighthouse, the great fishing port of Baleeira, and the fortress of Sagres, formerly home to the School of Navigation founded by Prince Henry the Navigator.

Tour Highlights

Silves

The dark red of mighty castle walls that loom over the city and the surrounding countryside; the interplay of stone and light in the architecture of a Gothic church; reminders of the Moorish presence in the city’s history; streets of white houses that reflect the sun and the blue sky: herein lies the appeal of Silves, where the past merges with the present to make every visit an enduring memory. Points of Interest: Moorish Castle of Silves + Cathedral of Silves

Monchique

Encounter the stunning panorama of sea and mountains. The broadest views are seen at Fóia, which at 902 metres is the highest point in the Algarve. From there the view stretches away on one side as far as Cape St. Vincent (and north to the Serra da Arrábida, near Lisbon), and on the other to Faro and a vast semi-circle of hillsopen views, from the highest point of the Algarve. Points of Interest: Monchique mountain views

Lagos

The glowing gold of Baroque carving on church walls; battlements evocative of past conflicts; the presence of Prince Henry and the seafarers who unveiled the ocean’s first secrets at the helm of fragile caravels: all fascinating points of interest on an itinerary through a city proud of its history and the role it played in the voyages of exploration known as the Discoveries. Points of Interest: St. Anthont’s curch + Old slave market

Cape St. Vicent

For the Romans, this whole area was part of the Promontorium Sacrum (from which the name Sagres is derived), the most westerly point in the world, where the setting sun made the waters of the ocean boil. The transportation, after the Arab invasion, of the body of São Vicente (St. Vincent) to the cape that was named after him turned it into a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Later, Cabo de São Vicente also became an obligatory landmark for any ship travelling to the Mediterranean, and was the scene of many major sea battles. Source: Turismo do Algarve

Points of Interest: Cape of St. Vincent, the “End of the World”
